Health insurance age bands in the UAE, explained

An age band is the range of ages a UAE rate chart prices as one row, so everyone inside it pays the same base premium. There is no common grid between insurers — across the charts Rabt holds there are 22 distinct bands — so comparing plans means mapping every member onto a different row for every plan.

What is an age band?

An age band is the range of ages a rate chart prices as a single row. A band written 26–35 means every member aged 26 to 35 takes the same base premium, whether they are 26 and a day or 35 and eleven months.

Insurers band ages because pricing each individual year would produce a grid nobody could publish or check, and because the underlying claims cost genuinely does move in steps rather than smoothly.

Is there a standard UAE age grid?

No, and this is the part that costs brokers time.

One chart runs eight bands: 0–1, 2–5, 6–15, 16–25, 26–35, 36–45, 46–55, 56–65. Another splits the same span into fifteen, with narrower bands through the twenties and thirties, single-age rows at boundaries like 60, and an open-ended row covering 76 and over. Across the insurer packs Rabt currently holds there are 22 distinct age bands.

Two charts can price the same 34-year-old off rows labelled 26–35 and 31–35 respectively. Those are different populations with different average claims, so the two premiums are not comparing like with like even before network and co-pay are considered.

Why does this break spreadsheet comparison?

A spreadsheet comparison wants one row per member and one column per plan. Producing that requires, for every member and every plan, finding which band that plan puts that member in and reading the right cell.

For a family of four across seven plans that is 28 lookups. Add a member and it is 35. Change one plan's network and a whole column moves. Brokers do this accurately when they have time and approximately when they do not, and the approximation is invisible in the output.

What is the cliff at a band boundary?

Because a band prices as one row, crossing a boundary moves the premium in a step. A member turning 36 the week before inception can take a materially higher premium than the same member a fortnight earlier — not because anything about them changed, but because the row did.

Two things follow for a broker:

  • Check date of birth against the boundary before quoting, not after.
  • Where a renewal date is movable and a member is days from a boundary, moving it is worth real money on a large scheme.

Age at inception, at renewal, or next birthday?

Charts differ, and the difference decides which row a borderline member lands on. The basis is usually stated in small print above the grid — age at inception, age as at policy start date, age next birthday — and it is one of the first things lost when a chart is cropped into a slide or pasted into a spreadsheet.

A quote that does not record which basis it used cannot be reproduced six months later when somebody asks why the figure was what it was.

Do children band differently?

Yes, and more sharply than adults. Charts commonly carry a 0–1 band priced well above 2–5, because the first year of life is expensive. Some plans price a standalone child — a child enrolled without a parent on the same policy — as its own category or refuse it entirely.

Where a plan refuses standalone children, that is an eligibility rule, not a price. It removes the plan from the comparison for that family rather than adjusting a number in it.

How does Rabt handle bands?

Rabt stores each band as it appears on the chart — an age from, an age to, a category and a network — rather than normalising every insurer onto one invented grid. Normalising would make the comparison tidy and the premiums wrong.

Instead the member's date of birth is resolved against each plan's own bands at quotation, so a comparison across seven plans reads seven different rows and states the same member's premium under each. That is the lookup a spreadsheet makes a person do 28 times.
