Age band

An age band is the range of ages a health insurance rate chart prices as a single row — 26–35, for example — so every member whose age falls inside that band takes the same base premium regardless of where in the band they sit.

Bands are not standard between insurers

There is no common UAE age grid. One chart runs 0–1, 2–5, 6–15, 16–25, 26–35, 36–45, 46–55, 56–65. Another splits the same span into fifteen bands with single-age rows at 60 and open-ended rows at 76 and over. Across the charts Rabt currently holds there are 22 distinct age bands.

That is the single biggest obstacle to comparing UAE health insurance plans in a spreadsheet. A column per insurer only works if the rows line up, and they do not.

The cliff at the boundary

Because a band prices as one row, a member turning 36 the week before inception can move a whole band and take a materially higher premium for a birthday. Brokers who quote from a chart by hand learn to check the date of birth against the band boundary before quoting; brokers who quote from software should expect the software to do it.

Age at what date

Charts differ on whether they mean age at inception, age at renewal, or age next birthday. The rate chart usually says, in small print above the grid, and it changes the answer for anyone near a boundary. A quote that does not record which basis it used cannot be reproduced later.
